The legalization of medical cannabis has paved the way for the broad recognition of cannabis as both a recreational substance and one with serious medicinal benefit. More states, including Massachusetts, are at minimum legalizing a medicinal cannabis program.
But even though medical cannabis is legal in our state, many people don’t know how to apply for a medical cannabis card in Massachusetts. We’re here to help.
Discover the numerous benefits of medical cannabis, the process of obtaining a medical card in Massachusetts, and the tax exemption it provides. Plus, learn about its specific strains for effective treatment of serious ailments.
While recreational cannabis is legal in Massachusetts, there are distinct differences between buying cannabis recreationally or medicinally. For starters, medicinal cannabis does not incur the 10.75% tax that is placed on recreational cannabis, making it more affordable.
Medical cannabis is also formulated in ways that are directly positive for specific ailments, whereas recreational cannabis is more broadly beneficial and pleasurable.
Medicinal cannabis is used to treat symptoms and side effects for a variety of conditions, including but not limited to:
This is a short list of conditions that are treated by medical cannabis and that are qualifying conditions for medical cannabis registration. Many other chronic diseases are eligible for medical cannabis through the state of Massachusetts, so once you find a licensed medical cannabis doctor, it is important to discuss all of your ailments with them to determine if medical cannabis is right for you.
The process to obtain a medical marijuana card in Massachusetts is very straightforward and patient-friendly.
The first step is to find a doctor registered with the Massachusetts Medical Use of Marijuana Program. These doctors are highly trained on the benefits of marijuana as a treatment for chronic conditions and are the only doctors in the state licensed to certify patients for medical marijuana authorization.
Once the doctor certifies you, you will then register with the state on the Mass.gov website. You will receive a personal identification number (PIN) which you will use to register for your card.
There is no fee to register or renew each year through the state, but it costs $10 to replace a lost, stolen or destroyed card. There may be a doctor’s fee for annual certification visits.
Registration for your card requires the PIN that the state provides you, a current photo and a form of identification, as well as a utility bill, mortgage, property tax statement or some other form to prove residency in the state of Massachusetts. You will log onto the cannabis registry website and upload scans or photos of the documents requested, and fill out the application. As long as all the information is valid and verifiable, you will receive your card in the mail.
(The registration process must be done first, and can have a different expiration than the medical card itself. Sometimes a certification will expire before the medical card, and in these cases we cannot sell medical marijuana.)
Remember you will need your:
Remember that while the medical card (hard copy or temporary) allows the patient to purchase medicinal marijuana, we must also check a regular state ID or license to allow entry into the dispensary.
Medical marijuana is more stringently researched than recreational strains because it is designed specifically to help people with chronic pain or other ailments. Budtenders, farmers and cannabis producers at every step of the process make it their duty to ensure that people suffering from chronic conditions have access to the highest-quality and most beneficial marijuana they can get.
A person who has been self-medicating for Parkinson’s using recreational cannabis might find that a specific strain of medicinal marijuana turns out to be dramatically more effective. There’s no way to know until you speak with an experienced budtender who can point you toward products designed for your condition.
Remember, you will need to bring your medical marijuana card or the temporary card that the state gives you once registration is complete. They will use your identification to verify that you qualify for medical cannabis, often gaining access to varieties of cannabis products that recreational users do not have. Additionally, medical users are allowed to buy more cannabis at one time than a recreational user, and again, you are not taxed in the same way.
Once you are in the shop and your card has been verified, a budtender will discuss what strains and products would be best for you and your current medical needs.
