Debunking Cannabis Myths by Separating Fact From Fiction

Ghost Dawg strain - Cannabis Indica - New England Harvest Clinton, MA

Cannabis is one of the most popular natural recreational substances on the planet, and yet there are a tremendous number of old, persistent myths that surround it. Unfortunately, many of these myths will stop people who would otherwise benefit from the effects of cannabis from ever giving it a chance.

Explore the truth about cannabis myths and uncover the facts at NE Harvest. From debunking misconceptions about addiction and harmful effects to discovering diverse consumption methods beyond smoking, we provide insights to empower informed decisions.

Now, let’s take a look at five of the most common myths about cannabis, why you should not be so worried about it, and how it may be able to help you.

Myth 1 – Cannabis is a gateway drug

If you grew up in the ’80s or ’90s, you were bombarded with the idea that smoking cannabis even one time may result in a lifetime of addiction to hard drugs. While this sounds silly to people who use cannabis, it was a powerful propaganda tool.

The truth is that cannabis does NOT lead to hard drug use. The effects of cannabis are so vastly different from something more elicit like ecstasy or cocaine that you can’t even compare them. The only thing that cannabis might be a gateway to is junk food, to paraphrase another 90s reference.

Myth 2 – Cannabis has no benefits

Many people see cannabis simply as a recreational product like alcohol and immediately dismiss any claims of positive benefits, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Many studies indicate the cannabis has at least limited benefits for a variety of medical concerns such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Loss of appetite
  • Chronic pain
  • Glaucoma
  • Insomnia

There are regularly new discoveries indicating the benefits of cannabis for a variety of conditions. The truth is that cannabis contains hundreds of plant compounds that provide similar benefits to other plant compounds, but still need more research to discover their full effects.

Myth 3 – Cannabis is addictive

Some people believe that cannabis is highly addictive. And while it is true that some people may form a strong cannabis habit, it is more often than not because of their own personalities rather than the addictive properties of cannabis itself.

Cannabis lacks chemical compounds like nicotine that makes cigarettes so addictive. While the process of using cannabis may become routine, it can also reasonably be stopped, unlike alcohol abuse or long-term cigarette smoking.

Myth 4 – Cannabis is as harmful as cigarettes

It is true that smoking any substance can have negative health effects. Unfortunately, many people equate the risk of smoking cannabis with the risk of smoking tobacco products, and that is not true.

Cannabis itself does not have the amount of research that cigarettes do linking it to cancer or other harmful effects. Additionally, unlike cannabis, cigarettes are filled with tremendous amounts of other compounds that are addictive and cause significant damage.

Myth 5 – Smoking is the only way to consume cannabis

While it is true that smoking cannabis is the most visible and one of the oldest forms of consumption, there is a huge variety of ways to use cannabis now. From edibles and tinctures to patches, drops, and pills, you needn’t ever smoke cannabis to reap the benefits.
